NCDMM/America Makes to Host Elite Students from the National Defense University’s Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security & Resource Strategy for Week-long Program Focused on Additive Manufacturing

Eisenhower School Students to Visit America Makes and Its Membership Community
Blairsville, Pa. — March 27, 2018. The National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM) proudly announces that for the 13th consecutive year, it will host the Manufacturing Industry Study Group from the National Defense University’s Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy, formerly known as the Industrial College for the Armed Forces (ICAF), on April 2 – 6, 2018. The Study Group will visit the Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania regions for a week-long, additive manufacturing (AM) focused, field-study trip designed to complement their current in-class studies. NCDMM has arranged for the Study Group to visit its AM facility, America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, and several local America Makes members to gain first-hand knowledge of how AM is impacting the manufacturing industry.
Based in Washington, D.C., the Eisenhower School is a U.S. military educational institution tasked with preparing senior military officers, government civilians, and selected representatives from the private sector, and international officers for the national security challenges of the 21st century, including the resource component of national power. The curriculum focuses on industry studies with emphasis on advanced manufacturing, material acquisition, and joint logistics, and how these critical areas integrate into national security strategy.

We are proud to play a strategic role in these students’ education and prepare them for their duties in shaping economic and defense policies and managing the resources vital to our national security.”
The week’s activities will kick-off on Mon., April 2, with an afternoon tour of the Arconic Technology Center (formerly ALCOA) in New Kensington, Pa., before continuing on to Youngstown, Ohio. On Tues. April 3, students will first visit M-7 Technologies with representatives from Center Street Technologies in attendance and then spend the remainder of the day at America Makes.

During their visit to America Makes and our members, the goal is to have mutually beneficial and productive discussions that expand everyone’s understanding of how advanced manufacturing technologies, specifically additive, impact and relate to today’s strategic resource management and national security policy needs.”
While at America Makes, students will tour the facility, as well as the Youngstown Business Incubator’s (YBI’s) Tech Building 5, and participate in a panel discussion with local AM experts from the America Makes membership community, including Brett Conner, Director of Advanced Manufacturing Research Center, Youngstown State University; Dave Siddle, Sr. Program Manager, NCDMM; Barb Ewing, Chief Executive Officer, YBI; Ashley Martof, Additive Manufacturing Project Manager, YBI; and Cameron Rogers, Research & Development Engineer, rp+m; with America Makes Executive Director Rob Gorham serving as moderator. In the evening, a reception will be held for the Study Group to meet and network with AM industry leaders.
On Wed., April 4 through Fri., April 6, Eisenhower School students will continue to meet with America Makes members and tour their facilities throughout Western Pennsylvania, including:
- General Electric CATA in Imperial
- ANSYS Inc. in Canonsburg
- Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) with the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Institute in Pittsburgh
- Allegheny Technologies Incorporated (ATI) in Natrona Heights, Brackenridge, and Oakdale
- The ExOne Company in Irwin
The week’s activities will conclude with a visit to the Flight 93 National Memorial in Stonycreek Township, Pa., which commemorates the 40 passengers and crew of the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed in the September 11th, 2001 attacks, before returning to Washington, D.C.
