The Ohio State University’s Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence Joins America Makes

March 23, 2018 | Categories: Member News

COLUMBUS, OH  March 23, 2018 – Ohio State’s Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence becomes one of the newest members of America Makes as they continue to rapidly fortify their additive manufacturing capabilities.

As the brainchild of Ohio State’s College of Engineering and local manufacturing entities, the Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence (CDME) was established to be a collaborative space where the resources of Ohio State support the technical needs of the manufacturing industry. The arsenal of brand new, industrial-grade additive manufacturing equipment available within the confines of CDME make the latest technologies in advanced manufacturing accessible to the many layers of students, educators, and staff at Ohio State while members of Greater Columbus’ external industry can engage in a mode of manufacturing that was not an option to them a mere two months ago. “On behalf of all of us at America Makes, we extend a warm welcome to our new member organization – The Ohio State University. America Makes’ success in accelerating the adoption of additive manufacturing technologies is directly dependent upon the collaborative research and development efforts among our members. We are very pleased to now include The Ohio State University as one of them!” shares Rob Gorham, Executive Director, America Makes. This collaboration is the very nucleus of CDME, from all perspectives, and compliments our participation in America Makes.

Becoming a member of America Makes enables CDME to be part of an impressive contingent whose shared focus is on the acceleration of additive manufacturing and the translation of its advancements into both the academic and industrial fields, among others.

The Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence is a microcosm of the manufacturing industry. Its portfolio is designed specifically for parties within and outside of the university who want support in the areas of applied engineering and technical services to deploy cutting-edge innovation and sustain competitiveness in an increasingly technical marketplace. “Our membership of America Makes presents new collaborative opportunities for both tenants of our campus community and our external partners. We are excited to contribute our expertise in industrializing additive manufacturing with a national platform occupied by some of the most forward-thinking entities who are actively focused on the power of American additive manufacturing and 3D printing”, explains Ed Herderick, Director of Additive Manufacturing at Ohio State’s Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence. This designation is especially important in our mission to promote the competitiveness of small and large manufacturers who call Ohio home, as does America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute.

About Ohio State’s Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence
The Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence (CDME) is the manufacturing port of entry into The Ohio State University. CDME is a leader in innovative applied research for product design, technology commercialization, and manufacturing for industry. CDME was developed to meet the translational research needs of the university’s external partners. The center was funded initially via a $6.8M federal grant and by the College of Engineering to ensure that university innovation provides a more direct impact on the commercial manufacturing industry.
