Unblocking the Bottleneck: Novel Methods for Qualification of AM Parts

When

About the Webinar

The testing and qualification of 3D-printed parts have been cited as two of the biggest barriers to the uptake and adoption of metal AM. The large costs associated with printing and (mechanically) testing coupons are also a major problem for the qualification of AM parts and processes.

This talk will explain the fundamental science behind a novel testing technique, Profilometry-based Indentation Plastometry (PIP), already in use by major AM OEMs to determine the stress-strain characteristics of metallic materials. It will also explore how the technology is helping current AM users overcome challenges such as testing turn-around times and costs, as well as benefits including mapping the properties of components, and the flexibility to test very small samples and whole parts.

About the Instructor

The instructor is Dr. Jimmy Campbell, CTO of Plastometrex, a company that provides unique and advanced mechanical testing solutions for metallic materials. He holds both an undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, as well as a PhD specializing in experimental and computational development using the PIP method. This novel technique allows the extraction of full stress-strain curves (including yield strength and UTS) from a simple indentation test. His work has been published across 15 scientific publications, and he’s also co-inventor on 3 patents alongside his book ‘Testing of the Plastic Deformation Metals’ showcasing key findings within this field.
