Youngstown, Ohio — September 24, 2014. America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, driven by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM), is pleased to announce today that it honored Howard A. Kuhn, Ph.D., P.E. with the inaugural presentation of the America Makes Distinguished Collaborator Award, for his dedication and contributions to the Institute. This announcement came during the America Makes Program Management Review (PMR) Meeting held at the DeYor Performing Arts Center in Youngstown, Ohio. The America Makes PMR is a members only meeting that takes place twice a year.

The America Makes Distinguished Collaborator Award was established this year to recognize an individual or organization with exceptional commitment and dedication to advancing additive manufacturing technology, practices, and innovation in the manufacturing industry by building effective collaborative relationships with academia, government, and industry, and contributing to the mission of America Makes.

“On behalf of all of us at America Makes, I am honored to present the inaugural America Makes Distinguished Collaborator Award to our long-time friend and esteemed colleague, Dr. Howard Kuhn, in recognition of his many and significant contributions not only to America Makes, but also to the field of additive manufacturing and 3D printing,” said America Makes Founding Director and NCDMM President and Executive Director Ralph Resnick. “Few people have Howard’s vision and ability to bring and inspire mutual efforts together to advance the technology. We are honored to recognize his devotion and successful initiatives with the inaugural America Makes Distinguished Collaborator Award.”

Added Ed Morris, America Makes Director and NCDMM Vice President, “I’m very pleased to join Ralph in recognizing Howard’s contributions and can think of no one more deserving of this inaugural award. Howard continues to set the standard for his collaboration within the America Makes community of members. We greatly appreciate his commitment to advancing additive manufacturing technology, practices, and innovation in the manufacturing industry and the mission of America Makes.”

Today, Dr. Kuhn is a Technical Advisor at America Makes where he teaches a course, titled “Fundamentals of Additive Manufacturing Materials and Processes.”

Upon its founding in August 2012, Dr. Kuhn served as Acting Deputy Director of Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise, sharing his expertise and helping to establish a solid foundation for the new Institute.

At the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering, Dr. Kuhn currently serves an adjunct Professor, instructing courses in manufacturing, product realization, entrepreneurship, and additive manufacturing. He also conducts research on additive manufacturing of biomedical devices for tissue engineering at the University and serves as a co-principal investigator on an America Makes funded applied research project, titled “Additive Manufacturing of Biomedical Devices from Bioresorbable Metallic Alloys for Medical Applications.”

Dr. Kuhn is also a Research Consultant for The Ex One Company and previously served as Director of Prometal Technology for Ex One.

Additionally, Dr. Kuhn is the co-founder of Concurrent Technologies Corporation and served as the company’s Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for 12 years.
