America Makes’ Ashley Totin Honored as Mahoning Valley’s “Young Professional” Engineer of the Year 2019

Youngstown, Ohio — April 10, 2019. America Makes proudly announces that Project Engineer Ashley Totin was named Mahoning Valley’s “Young Professional” Engineer of the Year 2019 hosted by the Tech Belt Energy Innovation Center (TBEIC) in partnership with the Valley Alliance for Science and Technology (VAST) at its 2nd annual awards banquet held earlier this month.

TBEIC is a federally funded business incubator aimed at growing energy technologies while VAST is a member-driven organization created to foster an environment of technology innovation, application and growth in the Mahoning Valley and surrounding area.

“On behalf of all of us at America Makes, we extend our congratulations to Ashley on being named Mahoning Valley’s 2nd ‘Young Professional’ Engineer of the Year,” said NCDMM’s Executive Director of America Makes Rob Gorham. “For those of us who know Ashley and have mentored and worked with her, this latest achievement comes as no surprise to us. As one of our first America Makes interns to one of our newest project engineers, Ashley exhibits all the characteristics and drive necessary for a successful career in engineering, as well as a having passion for additive manufacturing. She is very deserving of this honor.”

2019 TBEIC Award - Ashley TotinThe “Young Professional” Engineer of the Year Award was broken down into four unique judging criteria, in which TBEIC and VAST believe the finest engineers in the world embody.

  • Leadership: Activity in associations, holding offices for groups, showing leadership in work
  • Awards and Honors: published work, research grants, patents, SBIRs, and other work
  • Community Service & Philanthropic Activity: names of organizations and examples of contributions
  • Engineering or Technical Projects: list and discuss any major engineering programs or projects that the nominee has been involved in, including how the project benefitted a company, profession, or community

This is Ms. Totin’s 2nd year to be nominated for a TBEIC & VAST Mahoning Valley award. Last year, she was a nominee finalist for Mahoning Valley’s Distinguished Female Engineer award.

As a former Workforce and Education Outreach Intern from January 2014 – May 2015 at America Makes, Ms. Totin recently rejoined the NCDMM and the America Makes team in February 2019 as a Project Engineer. In this role, she manages technical programs as the regional point of contact, supports America Makes Workforce and Education development, and contributes to the innovation facility and regionalization efforts.

Previously, Ms. Totin served as an Engineering Project Manager, for the Youngstown Business Incubator’s (YBI) Advanced Manufacturing Team. Her work focused on developing cost models and business case analysis pertaining to spare part production using additive manufacturing. Ms. Totin also served as the Director of the Additive Manufacturing (AM) Commercialization Program and assisted with accelerating additive manufacturing for tooling applications in Northeast Ohio.

While pursuing a Master of Science in Engineering in Industrial & Systems Engineering at Youngstown State University (YSU), Ms. Totin served as a Graduate Research Assistant. Her research involved working with the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), Air Logistics Centers, University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI), and aerospace manufacturers to determine the best use of advanced digital manufacturing, especially additive manufacturing, to support the maintenance and sustainment of legacy aircraft in the Air Force inventory. Ms. Totin also holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Industrial & Systems Engineering from YSU.

Ms. Totin holds a Six Sigma Green Belt and has received three certificates for various coursework related to sand casting from the American Foundry Society.
