America Makes Announces Annual Fall Program Review and Members Meeting

The Instituteto Host “America Makes” Week in Youngstown at Stambaugh Auditorium with PRMM, Technical Review and Exchange (TRX), and Other Institute Events, Including the Additive Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative (AMSC) Meeting, NIST MSAM Workshop, and UL Training

Youngstown, Ohio — September 22, 2016America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, is pleased to announcethat on September 27-29,2016, it will hold its annual Fall Program Review and Members Meeting (PRMM) and Technical Review & Exchange (TRX) atStambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown, Ohio. This year’s theme is “Vision – Action – Impact.”

Driven by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM), America Makesis the nation’s leading and collaborative partner in additive manufacturing (AM) technology research, discovery, creation, and innovation. Each year, America Makes hosts its PRMM event to bring its member community together in Youngstown to impartthe latest information on the Institute; report on and review technical content as it relates to AM research projects; and provide an opportunity for members to network and collaborate.

Before PRMM officially gets underway on Tuesday, September 27thAmerica Makes and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will also host the second face-to-face meeting of the Additive Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative (AMSC) on Monday, September 26th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.The purpose of the meeting will be to review and discuss a first draft of the AMSC Standardization Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing that will be released prior to the meeting.

On Tuesday, September 27thPRMM will commence at 8:00 a.m. with openingremarks to be made by Ed Morris, America Makes Director and NCDMM Vice President, and Ralph Resnick, America Makes Founding Director and NCDMM President and Executive Director.The day will focus on the operations and management of the Institute to include discussions on strategic goals and updates from Deputy Directors on the state of Technology Transition, Technology Development, and Workforce, Education and Outreach. Additionally, industry expert, Terry Wohlers, of Wohlers Associates, Inc. will presenthis take on the state of the AM industry with the Wohlers Report.

Also during PRMM, America Makes will announce the awardee of its Distinguished Collaborator Award. Established in 2014, the America Makes Distinguished Collaborator Award recognizes an individual or a group of individualswith exceptional commitment and dedication to the advancement of AM technology, practices, and innovation in the manufacturing industryThe Institute honors the recognized individual(s) for cultivating effective collaborative relationships with academia, government, and industry, and contributing to the mission of America Makes.

Tuesday’s PRMM activities will conclude with an evening networking reception and a Collaboration Café activity with two sessions. 

The Collaboration Café is a way for attendees to engage with other members in a round-robin type networking activity. This will be the first time America Makes has used such an activity, the Institute is excited for its success.Member participationincludes ATI Metals, Autodesk, Optomec, Senvol, UL and the University of Texas at El Paso in Session A from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Baker Hughes, Deloitte Consulting, the America Makes Roadmap Advisory Group, NCDMM, Oerlikon, UTC, and the Lanterman Group in Session B from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

On Wednesday, September 28thAmerica Makes will hold its third Technical Review and Exchange (TRX) event for 2016 withstatus reports given byprincipal investigators for seven, ongoing projects.TRX is more technically focused with content being shared at an in-depth level. The presentation format is intended to be flexible and conversational in its structure to permit more organic interaction throughout each presentation so that ideas are exchanged, best practices are discussed, and projects are understood by the attending membership community at a richer, deeper level.

A new Directed Project Opportunity will be announced, as well as the new projects underway will be introduced.

Also during TRX, America Makes will mark the completion of its first Innovation Sprint challenge by announcing the winner of the competition with a Silver-level Membership to the Institute for one year, worth $15,000. The America Makes Innovation Sprints is a pilot series of three, individual challenges to further research and development in key areas that support the Institute’s Technology Roadmap and the advancement of the AM industry while reaching a broader audience of innovators. The first in the series of challenges focused on using AM methods to further the potential of “smart structure” disruptive technologies. 

Closing remarks made by Director Morris will bring the day’s TRX activities to a close.

Finally, on Thursday, September 29thAmerica Makes week in Youngstown will wrap up with the conveningof the followingthree meetings:

Deputy Director Leann Gluck will lead the meeting of the America Makes Workforce and Education Advisory Group from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

From 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., a close-out presentation of the recently completed the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Measurement Science for Advanced Manufacturing project that was managed by America Makes / NCDMM. This project was executed by three different organizations — EWI, CTC (Concurrent Technologies Corp), and University of Louisville — and each of these principal investigator organizations will present their results.In addition, attendees will participate in workshop, brainstorming, and roadmapping activities for the identification of potential next steps.

Lastly, from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., in conjunction with America Makes, UL AM is offering a condensed version of our Managing Quality & Safety in AM course. The course is a discussion-oriented half-day session in which participants will gain a working knowledge of process and material hazard management and how to assure quality and safety in part production.
