We are the nation’s leading public-private partnership for additive manufacturing technology and education.

What is additive manufacturing?

Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, is a process of creating three-dimensional objects by building them one layer at a time. It starts with a digital design that is sliced into thin layers, and then a 3D printer builds the object by depositing or solidifying material. This allows for the creation of complex and intricate shapes that may be difficult or impossible to achieve with traditional manufacturing methods. This technology is revolutionizing various industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, aerospace, automotive, and more. The AM industry is constantly evolving — pushing the boundaries of innovation and what is possible!

Working together for competitive advancement.

America Makes members from industry, academia, government, workforce and economic development organizations, work together to accelerate the adoption of AM and the nation’s global manufacturing competitiveness.

Founded in 2012 as the Department of Defense’s national manufacturing innovation institute for AM and first of the Manufacturing USA network, America Makes is based in Youngstown, Ohio, and managed by the not-for-profit National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM).

Satellite Centers

Satellite Centers serve to promote America Makes’ mission.

We are expanding our current regional, industrial, and technological footprint by engaging with local companies and educational institutions to supply education and training in additive manufacturing technologies and to focus on the transition of additive technology from the research lab to commercialization. America Makes currently has three Satellite Centers.
